Sciatica

Sciatica could be caused from pinched nerve due to various reasons- minor or major
  1. Need to rest on back, pillow under knees so less strain on sciatic nerve.
  2. Though rest is important when pain is severe, important to remain active while being careful not to cause further injury. If don’t move, muscles weaken further, stiffness occurs, mobility decreases.
  3. Need to work on proper posture, proper bending, strengthen abdominal & back muscles.
  4. Very effective asana for sciatica is shalabhasan morning & evening.
  5. Pilates strengthens core without much strain.
  6. Boil in 100ml water, a handful of parijatam leaves till water reduces to 1/2, drink with jaggery morning, evening.
  7. Constipation puts pressure on back muscles. So shd see there’s more fiber in food. Night before bed- 1t Triphala powder mixed in cup warm water.
  8. Due to vata, so avoid cold food, cold temperatures, keep oneself warm, use cold compressed vegetable oils to pacify vata.
  9. Add 1/2c epsom salt to warm water in bath tub, stir in well till dissolves, lie down for 10-15mts. Magnesium relaxes muscles.
  10. For calcium- sesame balls with jaggery, ragi porridge.
  11. Protein is needed for repair.
  12. B vitamins for nerve health.
  13. Omega 3 for inflammation. Flax seeds.
