For this inexpensive project, we need: 3 similar 5 gallon plastic buckets with lids, so to stack perfectly.
- In 2 of the buckets drill a bunch of 3/16 inch holes in the bottom, about 1″ apart.
- Drill a line of 1/8 inch holes near the top of each bucket for air flow, so the bins don’t get too wet.
- Drill a bunch of 1/8 inch holes on the lid, for added aeration.
- Stack one of these buckets on 3rd bucket, which doesn’t have holes and lid. Add 3-4″ of moistened shredded newspaper or cardboard for bed, add some food scraps.
- Put the lid on the bin, let the worms do their thing. Add food as often as you need to.
- Once the contents of this layer start getting broken down, stack the next bucket, add bedding and food, place the lid.
- Worms will start migrating up to the top bucket for fresh food and bedding, and, after a couple of weeks to ensure that most of them have moved to the top bin, harvest the vermicompost from the middle bucket. Keep repeating the process as levels get full.
- 3rd bucket is to catch any moisture from the 2 bins. Fertilize plants with this ‘vermicompost tea’.
